ROCKFORD – For a religion deeply rooted in tradition, Monday’s ordination of Bishop David J. Malloy marked a new beginning for the Catholic Diocese of Rockford and its churches.

Westminster Presbyterian Church took time during Youth Club Sunday on April 29 to recognize the contributions of Tracy Paszotta, the program’s director for nine years.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. John (Missouri Synod) will hold an old-fashioned picnic on the church grounds from 1 to 5 p.m. June 2.

First Congregational United Church of Christ, 615 N. First St. in DeKalb, will hold its annual Flower and Plant Sale this weekend.

Cortland United Methodist Church will host a free community meal from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. 

The final movie of the UUFD Cultivating Hope film series, “The Economics of Happiness,” will be shown only at 3 p.m. May 20. The May 18 showing has been cancelled. It will be shown at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St.

The 43rd annual Lobster Boil will be held May 19 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in DeKalb, with live lobsters distributed at 4 p.m., and cooked lobsters at 5, 6 or 7 p.m.

Dan Kenney hopes Saturday’s breakfast at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be much more than an opportunity to show appreciation on Mother’s Day.

The public is invited to the third annual Ladies Lilac Luncheon, a relaxing afternoon of music, buffet lunch, shopping, raffles, activities and creative table designs. Because of the popularity of the event, table reservations are encouraged.

The Ordination and Installation of Monsignor David J. Malloy as the ninth Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Rockford is set for May 14 at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford.

First Lutheran Church’s 10th annual rummage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church’s social hall at 324 N. Third St. in DeKalb.

The Kingston United Methodist Church monthly supper will be Saturday. Seating times are 5 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

Pastor Gary Erickson said spreading God’s word is just one of many roles the church should have in the community.

The Welcome Cafe will offer a free community meal at its “Bring Mom to Breakfast” event to be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. May 12 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St., DeKalb.

The Lobster Boil at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has been a DeKalb tradition since 1967. This fundraiser supports both church activities and social service agencies in the community.
